OneNote, Microsoft’s answer to Evernote, never really gained a lot of traction against the king of the hill for mobile note-taking and syncing, especially with Mac users that were left out in the cold without a native app. Luckily, Microsoft finally righted this oversight and now OneNote for Mac is available, so you can sync your notes across platforms, including mobile devices. OneNote is free and works pretty seamlessly. Check out the basics below and see why it’s better than Evernote for getting yourself more organized. Installing OneNote on your Mac is extremely straightforward thanks to the Mac App Store. To head over to the Mac App Store and download OneNote for free. Sign in with your Microsoft ID or create a new one, and you’re all set.
Reason 1: Tabbed Notebooks OneNote for Mac makes it easy to have multiple, smaller sections of a larger notebook by using tabs. While Evernote has notebooks that allow notes to live within them, the focus in Evernote is on the individual notes, with an extra step required to add them to a notebook.
OneNote focuses on the notebook, with notes showing up in new notebooks automatically. This built-in factor helps new users jump into using OneNote with more organization and less work. Also, the tabs in each notebook are color-coded so you can see what you’re looking for much more quickly than reading the note name. Reason 2: Note Sections So you like the tabbed notes idea, eh? Well, then, you’ll love this. Each note in OneNote lets you add an unlimited number of pages. Evernote has the same number of organizational levels, but they operate much less congruently.
Evernote’s lowest level is the note, with multiple notes showing up in a notebook, and multiple notebooks showing in a stack. OneNote’s method allows your notes to work more like your brain does, which means more organization from the start. Instead of having to manually create notebooks and stacks in Evernote, they’re all set out waiting for you in OneNote. Reason 3: Type-Anywhere Layout The biggest issue with note applications like Evernote is that they are less like writing in a notebook and more like typing in a basic text editor. OneNote for Mac allows you to type anywhere in the note; all you have to do is click.

If you did that in a paper notebook and later decided that you wanted one item moved, you’d have to cross it out and rewrite it. OneNote uses containers for each item on a page. If you want to place a bit of text somewhere else, all you have to do is click and drag it. Nothing is forever in a OneNote note, so type away and then move items as you want. This means all you have to do is click the To Do item in the Microsoft OneNote Ribbon and you instantly get a to-do list that floats wherever you want. While Evernote has to-do lists, their one-click accessibility in OneNote makes them somewhat superior to those found in Evernote. Along with the to-do list button come other visual tags that help you remember where you left off in a note, what questions you need answered, and what you feel is important. All in all, it’s pretty amazing.
